SUMMARY: Reno, Nev. (Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007) –
The National Automobile Museum in downtown Reno is kicking off
a year-long centennial celebration of one of America’s
most historically significant automobiles – the 1907 Thomas
Flyer, winner of the 1908 around-the-world automobile race.
During a time when the automobile was considered a novelty,
the six cars that participated in the harrowing 22,000-mile,
169-day journey blazed the trail for modern road warriors worldwide.

The yearlong celebration began on Wed., Nov 7 with a private
exhibit opening party. Party participants were the first to
see the new exhibit which includes the race-winning Thomas Flyer,
priceless race artifacts rarely removed from the archives, a
race timeline, human-interest stories from 100 years ago and
12 newly-commissioned oil paintings depicting scenes of the
Thomas Flyer’s adventures.
While
the star of the show was undoubtedly the Thomas Flyer, the evening’s
other main attraction was a compelling Chautauqua performance
by Jeff Mahl, the great-grandson of George Schuster who drove
the Thomas Flyer to victory in Paris, France, almost 100 years
ago.
Travelers are invited to explore this riveting moment in world
history at the National Automobile Museum, where the special
exhibit will be on display through January 5, 2009. The Museum
is open Mon. – Sat. from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sun.
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors
and $4 for children 6 to 18 years. Children age 5 and younger
are free.
