[January 20, 2010 - Tahoe City, CA.] Tahoe City, in North Lake Tahoe,
was engulfed by heavy snowfall Wednesday afternoon as the third in a
wave of strong winter storms brought high winds and snow to the region,
and cheers from skiers and snowboarders.
Snow has been falling since Sunday afternoon as a series of winter storm fronts have impacted Lake Tahoe and the High Sierra, as well as the entire state of California.
Lake Tahoe ski resorts reported storm totals of up to four feet as of Wednesday morning, and skiers and snowboarders were enjoying fresh powder conditions for the third consecutive day. The new snowfall will provide excellent ski conditions as resorts head into the heart of the ski season in February and March.
By midday Wednesday, snow was falling steadily and high winds were creating blizzard conditions around the region. Interstate 80, which crosses the Sierra Nevada at Donner Summit, between Reno and Sacramento, was closed for several hours due to deteriorating driving conditions and multiple spinouts.
Snowfall Wednesday night was again heavy, and forecast to continue through early Thursday morning. After a short break early Thursday, another storm front is forecast to arrive with more snow into Friday.
