Joey Chestnut Sets Nevada State Record
by Consuming Seven Pounds of Pork Rib Meat in 12 Minutes
SPARKS, NEV, Aug. 29, 6 p.m. PDT - Defending
champion Joey Chestnut retained his title today at the Nugget
World Rib Eating Championships in Sparks, Nev., during the opening
day of the 19th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off.
Chestnut, from San Jose, Calif., set a Nevada state record,
consuming an impressive seven pounds of pork rib meat in 12
minutes, narrowly defeating his main rival in the pork rib discipline,
Chicago’s Pat Bertoletti, who pounded an equally astonishing
6.1 pounds of meat. The two gluttoness gurgitators went bone-for-bone
during the first two-thirds of the contest before Chestnut pulled
ahead in a relentless display of sustained consumption.
Chestnut has been riding a wave of competitive eating success,
having recently bested Japanese phenom Takeru Kobayashi during
the Nathan's Famous 4th of July International Hot Dog Eating
contest at Coney Island, downing an astounding 66 hot dogs and
buns in 12 minutes. Currently the world's No.1-ranked competitive
eater, Chestnut is the record holder in the pork rib discipline
with a 12-minute total of 8.4 pounds.
The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off is
among the largest outdoor barbeque events in the country. The
event last year hosted more than 500,000 people, served 100
tons of ribs and featured more than 40 live bands over the course
of six days. The Rib Cook-off this year runs Aug. 29 through
