SUPPORTING
COPY: Squaw Valley USA, North America’s Spring Skiing
Capital, receives over 450” of snow annually making it possible
for the resort to remain open through the end of May every winter. Many
say a blue-bird powder day is the best way to enjoy the abundant California
snowfall, however, more and more guests every year are discovering the
joy of skiing and snowboarding on the soft spring ‘corn’
snow under the warm California sunshine.
Spring
at Squaw Valley blends the best of both worlds; sunny California weather
and abundant snowpack. In addition, the springtime means more elbow
room on the slopes, the need for fewer bulky clothes and the opportunity
to enjoy Squaw’s many outdoor sundecks and patios. Above all,
spring also brings ‘corn’ snow. This is a process whereby
the snow enters a freeze-and-melt cycle. The snow freezes at night and
then softens gradually throughout the day as it is warmed by the sun.
To the skier or snowboarder, the corn snow surface is soft and forgiving
and makes turning easy and fun.
A highlight of the spring experience at Squaw is the annual opening
of the High Camp Swimming Lagoon and Spa, scheduled for mid-March, 2008.
The high altitude pool and Jacuzzi offers skiers and snowboarders a
one-of-a-kind mountain experience. Only at Squaw Valley USA can guests
combine a great day on the slopes with a dip in a mountaintop swimming
pool and a soak in a giant slopeside Jacuzzi. The free-form swimming
lagoon is heated to approximately eighty degrees and contains two twenty-five
meter lap lanes. The twenty-five foot diameter spa is heated to a soothing
103 degrees and surrounded by expansive decks and a casual umbrella
bar.
BEST
OF SPRING AT SQUAW
Best
place to find powder in March and April...
- Broken
Arrow: From the top of the Broken Arrow lift go slightly left and
ski down on the boundary of Broken Arrow and Silverado.
- North
Bowl: Take the Headwall lift. At the bottom of the lift off ramp make
a 180 degree (sharp) left turn and start down the chair line. Take
a left as soon as there’s good coverage. Hence the name, some
of the best late-season skiing is found on North Bowl.
- Enchanted
Forest: From the Headwall chair take the groomer route. Continue on
the catwalk and then veer left as it flattens and begins going nearly
uphill toward KT. Because this area is between KT and Headwall and
you have to traverse from either to get to it, it often stays waste
deep and untouched until later in the day. It’s so much fun!
- Poulsen’s
Gulley: Take the Red Dog chair. At the top, drop in directly under
the Red Dog Chair.
Red Dog Ridge – Heidi’s: This north-facing area is great
for late-day freshies. Ride the KT-22 chairlift. Take a left at the
top of KT chairlift and follow the ridge line as far as you want.
Drop in where it’s shady and fresh.
Best
place to have a beer and bask in the sun...
- Le
Chamois: the benches and tables outside this classic ski bar are the
place to be from 2 pm on.
